June 6, 2011 (Day 70) — Karamel Mochiatto
The comedian Hal Sparks once made the point that anyone drinking anything other than black coffee at Starbucks wasn’t actually drinking coffee. They were drinking a milk shake. I’d say that’s pretty accurate. But they’re damn tasty milkshakes that give you lots of energy to do stupid things in fast-forward.
This evening’s drink is a takeoff on the coffee shop staple, only with booze. Which makes it like 20,000 times better than the one you get from your local barista.
Karamel Mochiatto
- 2 oz Sobieski Karamel
- 1 oz heavy cream
- 2 oz espresso coffee
Combine the ingredients in a rocks glass filled with crushed ice and stir well.
Very well balanced with a proper bit of sweet and bite from the coffee on the end. Tastes similar to a White Russian, only different.
Cheers!

I have made my own Kahlua in the past which was very interesting but haven’t mixed espresso into a drink yet. That looks like regular coffee in the background, though.
A macchiato is actually a 3 ounce drink made from espresso with either bubbly foamed milk on top, or poured in with smooth steamed milk like a latte, in recent trend anyway. Starbucks just stole the term rewrote the dictionary. Thanks, Starbucks!
Thanks, Jason! We’re planning on making some homemade liqueurs this summer. We’re already big proponents of infusing our own vodkas.
