Today is Derby Day, which means there’s tons of prerequisite stories about how you should be drinking Mint Juleps by the gallon. While the Mint Julep is a damn fine cocktail (and one of our favorites), there are many other options out there to tickle your Bourbon bone for Derby Day.
Whiskey Sour
A truly classic cocktail, this bit of bourbon brilliance appeared Professor Jerry Thomas’ legendary cocktail book
- 1 tsp powdered sugar
- Dash club soda
- Juice from half a small lemon
- 1 wine glass of bourbon (roughly 4 oz)
Take 1 large tea-spoonful of powdered white sugar, dissolved in a little Seltzer or Apollinaris water. Fill a bar glass full of shaved ice, shake up and strain into a claret glass. Ornament with berries.
The Derby
- 1 oz bourbon
- 0.5 oz sweet vermouth
- 0.5 oz orange curaçao
- .75 oz fresh lime juice
Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake well and then strain into a chilled martini glass.
Amaranth Cocktail
- 1.5 oz bourbon
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Fine white sugar
- Club soda
Place crushed in a mixing glass, two dashes Angostura bitters, one jigger whiskey. Mix, and strain into a rocks glass and fill up with soda; then take a very little fine sugar in small bar spoon and stir into the cocktail. Drink during effervescence.
