January 10, 2010 (Day 345) — Monkey Paw
Ah, the tale of the Monkey Paw — one of my favorites as a morbid little child. It was the embodiment of the whole “be careful what you wish for” adage.
From the always-trustworthy Wikipedia:
“The Monkey’s Paw” is a horror short story by author W. W. Jacobs. It was published in England in 1902.
The story is based on the famous “setup” in which three wishes are granted. In the story, the paw of a dead monkey is a talisman that grants its possessor three wishes, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate.
However, it’s not just a cautionary tale of messing with the cruel mistress known as fate. It’s also a pretty darn tasty rum-based cocktail.
Monkey Paw
2 oz Jamaican rum
1 oz orange brandy
2 oz pineapple juice
Club soda to top
Combine all of your ingredients in a rocks glass filled with ice. Stir and then serve. Preferably not with an actually Monkey Paw attached.
Definitely much more of a summer drink that something to be sipped as the snow falls. Still very tasty. As would be expected, the dark rum goes great with the pineapple juice.
Cheers!
