REVIEW – Henry DuYore’s Rye Whiskey

I’ve had a love affair with ryes the past several years, including a surprising affinity for Crown Royal’s Northern Harvest Rye. I also adore all the excellent work that Tad and the Ransom crew produce back west. Henry DuYore’s Rye Whiskey has 77.8% rye/22.2% barley mash bill, so its on the softer end of rye whiskey.

Bourbon and Baker brings Mixology to the Little Apple

Don’t let the location fool you. Cocktail culture is alive and well in the Midwest. Just look as far as Bourbon and Baker in Manhattan, Kansas for proof.

Rye and Shine

The stronger bite of the rye will take some of that syrup off, and the addition of the fresh lemon juice brings out the bite from the Dewshine. The Angostura bitters (or really any type of bitters you may like) will balance it out and give some extra depth.

Ryegroni

Happy Negroni Week, for those of you sober enough to remember there was a reason you started drinking nothing but Negroni’s on Monday! From the Negroni Week website: Negroni Week launched in 2013 as a celebration of one of the world’s great cocktails and an effort to raise money for charitable causes around the world. […]

REVIEW – FEW Rye Whiskey

Cocktails, 365 Rating: ★★★★★ This is one of the best ryes we’ve tasted at Cocktails, 365. It lacks some of the depth of a more aged spirit, but it’s that rawness that adds to the appeal.

Perfect Manhattan

May 23, 2013 (Day 14) – Perfect Martini My first experience with the Perfect Manhattan, truthfully, comes from The Simpsons. More specifically the third season episode “Bar the Murderer” where Bart becomes a bartender for the mafia. They ask him for a Perfect Manhattan. Perfect Manhattan  2 oz rye 1 oz dry vermouth 1 oz sweet […]

Lawhill

May 12, 2013 (Day 5) – Lawhill The spiciness of rye lends some excellent complexity to cocktails that aren’t present in other whiskeys. That spiciness can also bring out different layers of flavors in other super-powered liquors such as absinthe. Lawhill 2 oz rye whiskey 1 oz dry vermouth 1 dash Angostura bitters 1 dash […]

Jockey Club

May 11, 2013 (Day 3) – Jockey Club I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of people today about a local project I’m involved with that’s dedicated to purchasing and restoring a historical movie theater in my hometown’s downtown area. It was actually the site of the first-ever movie premiere outside of Hollywood. […]

REVIEW — Bulleit Rye

April 11, 2011 — Bulleit Rye I’ve finally got my hands on some Bulleit Rye. Nose: Good spicy nose, with a little bit of a vanilla tinge on the end. Neat: Excellent neat. You have the distinct spice of the rye right up front, but it cools out to a smoother vanilla taste on the […]

Old Pal

April 3, 2011 (Day 7) — Old Pal Everyone’s got one. That guy who always comes around just to hang out. No, not Jerry. That guy is kind of a douche. Nope, we’re talking about the good kind of guy. You know. An old pal. Old Pal 1 oz rye whiskey 3/4 oz dry vermouth […]
