August 28, 2013 (Day 111) – York Special
There was period in pre-Prohibition cocktails where vermouths, ports, sherries, and other heady wines held sway. It was their court, and they really ran the show. If you’re an intrepid cocktail archeologist, it means you have to look through these heavy, heady drinks even if you’re not particularly fond of any wines outside of your classic “standard” wines.
The advantage, however, is that you will grow to appreciate these not only as base spirits, but as they stand alone as well.
- 3 oz French (dry) vermouth
- 1 oz Maraschino liqueur (Luxardo)
- 4 dashes orange bitters
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and then strain into a cocktail glass.
