August 9, 2013 (Day 92) – Jamaican Rum Cocktail
This recipe is taken from the 1895 book Modern American Drinks by George J. Kappeler. Annotations are our own for clarification between classic and modern terms.
- 2 dashes gum syrup
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 jigger (1.5 oz) Jamaican rum
Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Shake well and then strain into a cocktail glass. Top with twisted lemon peel.
This is surprisingly delicate, with a light sugar flavor with some added citrus bite from the bitters. We used a lighter, golden Jamaican rum for this instead of a dark black-strap style. This is a very fitting drink for the end of summer as we start to transition to brain-melting hot to brain-melting hot with dead leaves.
