June 5, 2013 (Day 26) – The Aviation No. 2
We’re going to go ahead and call this The Aviation No. 2 as it’s not the original Aviation, however it was the one that was massively popular post-prohibition. You see, the original Aviation used créme de violette which gave the drink a lovely light-blue hue. Hence the name.
However, The Aviation that gained popularity across the globe in the 1930s and 40s completely removed the créme de violette and left the gin, lemon juice, and maraschino liqueur.
- 2.5 oz gin
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 2 or 3 dashes maraschino liqueur
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
The maraschino liqueur gives this cocktail an outstanding earthiness that you can only get from using authentic maraschino liqueur. Don’t use a dash of maraschino cherry juice. That’s not the same. Trust us, we’ll never live that one down.
Spring for the Luxardo and it will treat you nice.
