May 25, 2013 (Day 16) – Chevy Chase
So, imagine our surprise when scouring classic cocktail books from the 1930s we came across a very familiar name.
A name, in fact, that influenced our sense of humor in countless possible ways.
Appearing on page 26 of the 1934 book What Shall We Drink? by Magnus Bredenbek, is none other than the Chevy Chase.

Because you’re crazy and lonely!
That’s right. A cocktail named Chevy Chase, appearing a good nine years before good ol’ Cornelius was even born.
Chevy Chase
- 1.5 oz gin
- 1.5 oz dry vermouth
- 1.5 oz sweet vermouth
- Dash orange juice
- Dash orange bitters
- 1/4 tsp brandy
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and then stir well. Strain into a chilled martini glass.
