November 7, 2011 — Evan Williams Honey Reserve
We’re familiar with honey whiskey here at Cocktails, 365. And, as much as it may pain us to admit it (considering we like be all pompous and whatnot like the rest of the cocktail élite), we really do thoroughly enjoy it. Our personal favorite has been the Wild Turkey American Honey. Steer clear of the Jack Daniel’s Honey. Their other iterations are great. The honey, not so much.
However, we’ve had people pushing us towards the Evan Williams Honey Reserve for some time now. In fact, some had ranked it above the American Honey. Naturally we had to try it.
It won a silver medal, so it can’t be all that bad; and with a $15 average price for a 750 ml it’s downright cheap.
But how does it stack up to the discerning noses and palates of the Cocktails, 365 tasting panel?
Nose:
Nice citrusy and sweet smell with the bourbon bringing up the rear smells sweet.
Neat:
Warms on the tongue. There’s a bit of a harsh, almost medicinal taste on the front. That dissipates into a nice bourbon flavor tempered with the honey.
On the Rocks:
Very sweet, but well-balanced.
