ORIGINAL — Dust Storm Waltz

October 13, 2011 (Day 198) — Dust Storm Waltz

There was finally just a little bit of rain to settle the dust across the plains. However, for several days after a summer of unbearable heat, you could get brief glances of blinding dust storms. Whipping winds, loose soil do not for a pretty landscape make. That’s the fascinating thing about Dodge City, however. We’re this tiny little cowtown, clinging on to the high plains for dear life.

A new friend of mine, who has only lived in the area for about a year now, was candid with me over drinks last weekend. And he said it best. His first impressions upon arriving was how dirty this town is. Dingy, covered in dust. However, one year later?

“There are so many hidden gems of culture here. There’s a beautiful, artistic heart in the center of this town.”

So, consider this an homage to Dodge City — the home of Cocktails, 365 and a small, tattered, jewel on the Kansas plains.

Dust Storm Waltz

  • 2 oz Monarch Hazelnut Liqueur
  • 1.5 oz vodka
  • 1 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz cognac

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with crushed ice. Shake at least 30 seconds, or maybe more. You’ll want a nice layer of frost across the shaker. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a wheat straw.

It will have a beautiful, hazy quality to it. It has a nice taste of heavy nut and sweetness from the bourbon and the liqueur. Very nice. A perfect fall drink.

Cheers!
