Bitter Herbs

June 15, 2011 (Day 79) — Bitter Herbs

“In the desert

I saw a creature, naked, bestial,

Who, squatting upon the ground,

Held his heart in his hands,

And ate of it.

I said: ‘Is it good, friend?’

‘It is bitter-bitter,’ he answered;

‘But I like it

Because it is bitter,

And because it is my heart.'”

— Stephen Crane

Despite it’s name (and the opening poem which is one of my favorites), tonight’s drink is actually a bit on the sweet side. It’s also quite a bit more complex than the previous evenings drinks.

Just thought this was cool.

Bitter Herbs

  • Juice 1/2 lime
  • .5 oz lavender syrup
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 4 oz ginger ale
  • Smithwick’s Ale to top

Combine ingredients in a pint glass filled halfway with ice and mix.

Perfectly balanced, and in our opinion the best beertail of the week so far.

You have the strong bitterness on the back from the ale, but the ginger ale and lime lighten it with a beautiful herbal flavor on the back from the lavender and ginger.
