Absolute Sex (Feat. Big Nose Kate’s)

September 28, 2010 (Day 241) — Absolute Sex

Mary Catherine Horoy — or as she is more commonly known in her time, “Big Nose Kate” — was the paramour of Doc Holliday, the heavy drinking dentist. These are all characters that have a special place of affection in my heart, as an armchair historian of my hometown, Dodge City, KS. So, when an old friend from college who hails from Salina (where I’m on the road this week) suggested a place named “Big Nose Kate’s,” it goes without saying I was intrigued.

Located on the second floor of 119 N. Santa Fe Avenue in Salina, Big Nose Kate’s boasts old west decor, including portraits of Kate herself and the Doc Holliday. The bar has a nice distinct western, almost dive-like, feel to it. Trust me when I say this isn’t a bad thing. Rather, it gives the impression of a place you could come on a Tuesday night to relax after a long day at work and catch up with close friends.

It was a relatively slow Tuesday night, with some local regulars streaming through and back out the doors. Turns out that Black Crows was actually playing down the street that night, so I just happened to beat the college student rush that evening.

As per usual, I plopped down on the bar and struck up a conversation with that evening’s bartender — Ashley.

Ashley gave me two choices for the evening: something that tasted similar to Liquid Marijuana or something that tasted “exactly like Black Cherry Koolaid.” I chose the Koolaid tasting drink.

Absolute Sex

1.5 oz Absolut vodka

1.5 oz Midori

Sprite

Cranberry juice

Pour your two liquors into a highball glass filled with ice, then fill the glass halfway with Sprite. Top with cranberry juice, then garnish with maraschino cherries.

Sure enough, this tastes like Black Cherry Koolaid. It’s mellow enough you don’t get any burn from the alcohol. It’s also incredibly sweet, so I’m putting this in my “College Girl Drink,” category. It’s a solid creation, and kudos to Ashley for coming up with it. Only get it if you happen to be in the mood for a fruity, but solid creation.

Why Absolute Sex? Ashley just kind of blushed and shrugged when I asked her.

Fair enough.
