September 23, 2010 (Day 236) — American Pie
It’s the first day of fall, and despite being a June baby, fall is still my favorite time of the year. It brings back memories of Halloween (my favorite holiday), football (not a huge fan, but love college ball), and it heralds the start of hockey season.
The weather decided it was going to act accordingly, bringing in storm clouds, thunder and cool weather. It makes me long for hot apple cider on a cool fall evening. It’s not entirely cool enough for a hot drink, so let’s make a compromise.
It’s also oddly fitting, considering Kolin and I were listening to Don McLean last night. American Pie, to be exact.
American Pie
3 oz Jim Beam 7-year-old Bourbon
2 oz Travis Hasse’s Apple Pie Liqueur
In a shaker with ice, add ingredients and shake gently. Pour into a rocks glass filled with ice and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
Pure simplicity. I like that in my cocktails from time to time. you’re laden down with all sorts of “macro gastronomy” bullshit or parfait whipped howdeedoos. Two liquors. Some ice. Boom. It’s a solid, tasty drink. It’s powerful, too, which I’m always a fan of. It has a very smooth, sweet and apple taste. I love it.
Cheers!

That recipe looked so tasty that I immediately ran out to refurbish my bourbon etc. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the apple pie liquor (did the liquor dealer sneer at the request?)! I hope the apfelkorn schnapps does is close enough…
