St. Germain Cocktail

July 10, 2010 (Day 161) — St. Germain Cocktail

So, I’m a bit embarrassed that I’ve had my St. Germain for close to three weeks now, I have yet to actually make the liqueur’s signature cocktail. Or, “official” cocktail if you will — The St. Germain Cocktail.  (I have to wonder where they got the name.)

I will warn you before hand, however, that as I’m sipping this… it’s a little TOO easy to drink. I mean, It’s tasty, it’s light and it’s great. So, remember what Plato said! Or was it Aristotle?

“Everything in moderation.”

Note: It was Aristotle, part of Aristotelian Ethics.

Although, I would guess he probably didn’t say it English. I’m going to venture a guess and say it was in Greek. You know. Because he was Grecian and all. It was probably something like… Όλα στη μετριοπάθεια.

So anyway, on to the VERY French drink, which has nothing to do with ancient philosophers.

The St. Germain Cocktail

2 oz white wine (we used a chardonnay)

1.5 oz St. Germain elderflower liqueur

2 oz soda water

Build your drink in a Collins glass filled with ice. Gently stir the three ingredients together (you want to avoid making the soda flare up). Add a straw, if that’s the way you roll — that’s the way Jenn always rolls.

Jenn’s Take: This is seriously awesome. I think it’d be fun to play around with the different kinds of wines to see how the flavors change from drink to drink.

Mark’s Take: I concur. It’s not too sweet, and a great refresher. There’s a very good reason St. Germain has become so popular with bartenders across the world. It’s an incredibly versatile liqueur. Jenn and I both agree that you’ll probably want to stick with the dryer whites out there. Using a Riesling would simply be way too syrupy. An alternative listed is using a champagne to mix the drink. I think a drier sparkling white, such as Brut, would be perfect. And, considering how simple this cocktail is, it’s easy to enter into your regular rotation.
