White Russian

June 2, 2010 (Day 123) — White Russian

The White Russian is a classic cocktail. But, in my mind, it will be forever linked with Jeff Bridge’s The Dude from “The Big Lebowski.”

The Dude’s drink of choice. The perfect balance of sweet and creamy with the kick of vodka. Strong enough for a man, but drinkable by a woman.

1 oz Kahlua

2 oz vodka

1 oz heavy cream

Pour the Kahlua and Vodka over ice, into short glass. Top with cream. Stir.

Drink quick. You’ll have to stir fast if you don’t want your cream to go lumpy on the ice. Now, nothing hurts the cocktail — in theory. There’s taste difference and the cream won’t be bad for you. But, it’s just not a pleasant texture, nor is it pleasant to look at. So be careful.

Always a solid fallback for someone looking for a kick, but not wanting to go the route of shots or straight liquor. The coffee liqueur and cream go together well, of course, and vodka tends to take on the properties of its mixers, so it kind of hangs out in the back and doesn’t cause much of a fuss.

And rather than my standard sign off, in honor of The Dude and his White Russians, I’ll close with an applicable quote.

“Hey, careful, man, there’s a beverage here!”
