February 14, 2010 (Day 15) — Red Hot Martini
It’s Valentine’s Day! For some, this means that it’s the perfect time of year to snuggle up with their one true love, pop some bubbly and dine on chocolate dipped strawberries while quietly thanking the heavens they made it through one more year together. For us married folk, it’s all about angry, bitter self-loathing, followed by bouts of binge drinking, tempered with self-pity and bolstered with angry rants against you single people.
Just kidding, honey! You know I love you! And it’s that love that made me kowtow to popular demand and go with a themed cocktail for today’s offering. (Sorry all you single people out there. You’ll just have to drink this while putting the moves on yourself, I guess).
This cocktail was coupled with a personal favorite dish of Jenn and I’s: chicken in basil cream sauce. The spicy sweetness of the Red Hot Martini does an excellent job with the cool sweetness of the basil, coupled with the fried chicken and parmesan cheese. And, as one would hope, the Red Hot Martini does a damn good job of living up to its namesake.
Here’s the recipe for all you lovers out there:
- 2 oz hot cinnamon schnapps
- 2 oz vodka
- 1 oz simple syrup
Mix ingredients together in a cocktail shaker and combine. Pour into a chilled martini glass.
This is dangerously good, especially if you like Red Hots, or those spicy cinnamon gummi bears. The kick of the Hot Damn is dilutted with the vodka, and the simple syrup gives it just enough sweetness to replicate the taste of the famous Valentine’s candies almost dead-to-the-money. And, if you’re using good quality liquor, the drink is incredibly smooth without much of a bite. It’s easy to take these down pretty fast, especially when coupled with good food, good music and good conversation.
Happy Valentine’s everyone!
Genieße das Leben ständig!
